Health indicators: Recognizing significant nail and skin changes
Changes in nail and skin appearance can serve as indicators for various underlying health conditions.
Terry's nails, a condition where the nail plate appears mostly white or milky with a narrow pink or red band at the free edge, may be associated with heart failure, liver disease, or diabetes. While such changes can occur naturally with age, they should be monitored as they may reflect systemic processes rather than simple aesthetic issues or vitamin deficiencies.
Regarding skin health, most changes such as moles, freckles, or acne are harmless. However, medical attention is advised if existing moles or spots change in size, shape, color, or texture, or if they begin to itch, bleed, or crust. The ABCDE rule—Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter increase, and Evolution—is a common guideline used to identify potentially suspicious lesions like melanoma.
