Health initiatives in Italy target obesity and longevity

In Palermo, the Italian Obesity Society (SIO) and Novo are launching a public health initiative featuring free cardiometabolic screenings at Piazza Politeama from October 15 to 17. The campaign aims to increase awareness of cardiometabolic risk factors, particularly in Sicily, where obesity and overweight rates exceed the Italian national average. Data indicates that 13% of adults in Sicily live with obesity, compared to 11.6% nationally, while 34.6% of children and adolescents in the region are overweight, significantly higher than the national 26%.

Separately, Professor Valter Longo has emphasized the need for a national institute dedicated to aging and longevity to bridge the gap between academic research and practical application in schools and families. Highlighting the importance of scientific communication, Longo cautioned against oversimplified dietary narratives, noting that nutritional health relies on moderation rather than the demonization of specific foods. He also stressed the necessity of ensuring healthy lifestyle information reaches economically vulnerable populations.
