Health initiatives promote blood and bone marrow donation in Spain

Several health awareness and donation initiatives are scheduled in Spain. In Castilla y León, the Hospital del Bierzo will host a blood donation marathon on September 18. Organized by the Centro de Hemoterapia y Hemodonación de Castilla y León (Chemcyl) in collaboration with the Gerencia de Asistencia Sanitaria del Bierzo (Gasbi), the event aims to replenish blood reserves following the summer period. Chemcyl notes that approximately 450 donations are required daily in the region to support surgeries, oncology treatments, and emergencies.

In Badajoz, the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) will hold the UMEdula 2026 initiative on September 16. This event focuses on promoting bone marrow donation and encouraging citizens to join the Spanish Bone Marrow Donor Registry (REDMO). Supported by ADMO Extremadura, the day will include sports activities and information sessions. Individuals aged 18 to 40 who meet the requirements can express their intent to become donors and provide samples for typing during the event.
