Health insights: Kidney failure in youth and sleep's impact on longevity

A 24-year-old father from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, named Mohd Samy Azman, has been diagnosed with end-stage kidney failure despite maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Samy, who practiced regular exercise, healthy eating, and avoided alcohol and tobacco, experienced sudden chest tightness and breathing difficulties following a run. Medical examinations revealed that both kidneys had shrunken, requiring him to undergo lifelong dialysis.

In a separate health study conducted by researchers at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), new data suggests that sleep duration is a significant factor in longevity. Analyzing CDC data from 2019 to 2025, researchers found that sleeping fewer than seven hours per night is linked to lower average life expectancy. While factors like smoking and obesity show stronger correlations with mortality, sleep remains a critical component affecting cardiovascular health, the immune system, and brain function.
