Health insights on thyroid function and stress-related muscle tension
Health experts are highlighting how physiological symptoms can often be misattributed to stress or lifestyle factors when they may indicate underlying medical conditions.
Endocrinologist Dr. Jayaditya Ghosh warns of ten signs that may indicate thyroid dysfunction. The thyroid gland regulates metabolism, body temperature, heart rate, and energy levels. Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, can lead to unexplained weight gain and persistent fatigue. Conversely, hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid, can cause weight loss despite increased appetite. Other symptoms include sensitivity to temperature and mood fluctuations.
Additionally, the psoas muscle, often referred to as the ‘anxiety muscle,’ is noted for its connection to stress responses. As a deep muscle connecting the lumbar spine to the femur, it plays a key role in hip movement and spinal stability. During prolonged stress, the body’s evolutionary fight-or-flight response can lead to chronic tension in this muscle, affecting breathing, posture, and causing discomfort in the hips or lower back.
