Health Insurance Fund reports increased IVF usage following legislative reforms
The Health Insurance Fund (FZO) has reported that 1,883 applications for biomedical assisted reproduction (BPO) were submitted and reviewed between August 7, 2025, and August 20, 2026. Following legislative changes that increased the number of covered IVF attempts from three to six, 237 of these applications—approximately 12.6 percent—were for a fourth, fifth, or sixth attempt.
Specifically, the data shows 216 applications for a fourth attempt, 17 for a fifth, and 4 for a sixth. The Fund noted that these figures represent families receiving systemic support that was previously unavailable. In 2025, more than 97.3 million denars were realized for BPO procedures across eight contracted health institutions.
Beyond increasing the number of attempts, the reform simplified the process by introducing electronic delivery of approved rights, extending the appeal deadline from 8 to 15 days, and removing the requirement for a referral from a primary care gynecologist.
