Health insurance rights for Bosnians working in Germany
Citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina living and working in Germany can access necessary medical services in their home country under specific conditions. Due to a social security agreement between Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina, legally insured individuals in Germany are entitled to medically necessary healthcare during temporary stays in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This coverage is limited to treatments that cannot be postponed until the individual returns to Germany, such as sudden illness, injuries, or serious health conditions requiring urgent care. It does not guarantee that all examinations, medications, or hospital costs will be free of charge.
A standard German health insurance card is insufficient for this purpose, as the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is not valid in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Instead, insured persons must obtain a specific document known as the BH 6, or Auslandskrankenschein, from their German health insurance provider (such as AOK, TK, or Barmer) before traveling.
