Health insurers and experts push preventive self‑care from childhood
Health professionals argue that self‑care should begin early in life. Dr. Alexandra Vega of Genfar says, "Self‑care starts when we understand that health is a personal responsibility and cannot be fully delegated to others." She stresses the importance of balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, routine medical checks and proper medication use to prevent illness and maintain independence into older age.
At the same time, insurers are reshaping health‑insurance products to emphasize prevention. The Chilean Association of Insurers (AACH) reports that policies are adding benefits such as regular health screenings, preventive‑medicine programs, nutritional guidance, mental‑health support, telemedicine services and vaccination campaigns. These measures aim to identify risk factors early, reduce the incidence of chronic diseases and make health‑care resources more efficient.
Both approaches highlight education and habit formation as key to improving long‑term health outcomes for individuals and the broader health system.
