Health Literacy Month highlights challenges in medical communication

October marks Health Literacy Month, drawing attention to the difficulties many adults face when navigating medical information. Research indicates a significant gap in health literacy; for instance, a U.S. Department of Education study found that only 12% of U.S. adults possessed proficient health literacy, while more than one-third struggled with basic tasks such as reading prescription labels or benefits summaries.

Low health literacy can lead to increased healthcare costs, as individuals may skip preventive screenings and default to emergency room visits due to a lack of understanding regarding their coverage. To combat this, experts advocate for the use of plain language in health communication to ensure information is actionable and accessible.
