Health management and treatment impacts for SMA and pulmonary hypertension

Medical professionals and patients in Slovenia are highlighting the importance of physical activity and the impact of modern treatments for chronic conditions.

A patient living with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) shared how medical treatment has prevented the progression of the disease, allowing for increased independence and the ability to participate in physical activities like sports, which were previously impossible. The patient noted that treatment is not a ‘magic pill’ but a way to stop disease progression and open new opportunities.

In the context of pulmonary hypertension, physiotherapist Metka Medle from UKC Ljubljana emphasizes that total inactivity is not the solution. While patients often fear overexertion, research suggests that tailored physical exercise is beneficial. Medle recommends that patients monitor their symptoms and maintain an intensity where they can still hold a normal conversation. Activities such as walking in short intervals are recommended, provided patients stop if they experience dizziness, chest pain, or extreme shortness of breath.
