Health Minister addresses facility challenges at Lata Hospital
Minister for Health and Medical Services, Morris Toiraena, has acknowledged significant operational challenges at Lata Hospital in the Santa Cruz Islands, Temotu province. During a visit, Dr. Hugh Blessing Renga briefed the Minister on critical shortages, noting the facility currently operates with only two doctors despite a requirement for at least four.
Dr. Renga also highlighted shortages of nursing staff, essential medicines, and medical resources. He emphasized that the hospital's geographical isolation makes these shortages particularly impactful for patients. Minister Toiraena described the situation as a result of years of neglect and stated that the facility requires more than just renovations, suggesting that a new hospital is necessary to provide adequate infrastructure for the province.
