Health misinformation and the rise of digital infodemics

The proliferation of wellness and medical content on social media and search engines has led to a dangerous rise in health misinformation. This phenomenon, termed an ‘infodemic’ by the World Health Organization (WHO), involves an excess of information—much of it false or manipulated—spreading rapidly through digital platforms.

Several factors contribute to the growth of this trend, including emotional urgency in users seeking quick solutions, the use of false authority by creators who simulate scientific rigor, and social media algorithms that prioritize sensationalist or alarmist content over scientific accuracy.

Following unverified medical advice from influencers, unverified blogs, or unsupervised artificial intelligence poses significant risks. These include delays in diagnosing serious conditions like cancer or diabetes, dangerous drug interactions caused by unregulated supplements, and severe side effects from unproven treatments.
