Health officials in Romania report rise in infections

Medical professionals in Romania are highlighting different infectious disease trends across the country. In Sibiu, doctors have reported a surge in respiratory infections, with 441 cases of pneumonia recorded in a single week. Circulating pathogens include influenza A, respiratory syncytial virus, parainfluenza viruses, adenoviruses, and coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2. Experts note that respiratory infections are appearing earlier in the season than in previous years.

In Iași, medical authorities are emphasizing the importance of syphilis testing for pregnant women to prevent mother-to-child transmission. While the Romanian care protocol recommends VDRL or RPR blood tests during pregnancy, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) suggests more frequent screening. At the Sfânta Parascheva Clinical Hospital of Infectious Diseases, 20 syphilis cases were reported in the first ten months of 2026, following 51 cases in 2025.
