Health officials promote lead poisoning prevention and testing
Health departments in Rockland County, New York, and Mississippi are utilizing National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, observed from October 25–31, to emphasize the critical importance of testing children and homes for lead exposure.
In Rockland County, officials reported that 79% of children identified with elevated blood lead levels between 2022 and 2026 were exposed through lead paint. To combat this, the county is offering free home assessments, dust testing, and community events in Spring Valley where residents can bring household items like toys and kitchenware for testing. Property owners may also be eligible for financial assistance to mitigate hazards.
In Mississippi, state health officials highlighted that there is no safe blood lead level for children, noting that 1,136 children in the state had lead detected in their blood between 2021 and 2024. Experts warn that even low levels of exposure can cause irreversible developmental delays, learning difficulties, and behavioral problems. Officials recommend regular cleaning of surfaces, washing toys frequently, and inspecting older homes built before 1978 for peeling paint or lead in pipes.
