Health officials urge early breast cancer screening in Ghana and UK

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, health officials in Ghana and the United Kingdom are emphasizing the critical importance of early screening to improve survival rates.

In Ghana, the Breast Society of Ghana and medical leaders at Ridge Medical Centre report that breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. Experts note that between 50 and 80 percent of patients present at hospitals in advanced stages, which limits treatment options. However, the Breast Society of Ghana highlights that the survival rate for early-stage breast cancer in the country exceeds 90 percent, comparable to developed nations. Delays in diagnosis are attributed to factors such as lack of education, stigma, financial constraints, and a preference for unapproved herbal treatments.

In the United Kingdom, the North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust is urging women aged 50 to 70 to attend routine screenings. The trust reported detecting 141 cancers through its program last year. Health officials note that screening can save approximately one life for every 200 women screened, contributing to an estimated 1,300 lives saved annually across the UK.
