Health officials warn of toxic contaminants in Halloween products

Health advocates and government agencies are issuing warnings regarding toxic substances found in seasonal products. In the Philippines, the watchdog group BAN Toxics reported that Halloween toys and costumes, including masks and pumpkin-themed items, contained high levels of lead and cadmium. The group found lead levels as high as 1,130 parts per million (ppm) and cadmium levels up to 160 ppm. Additionally, the tested items failed to meet mandatory product labeling standards required by the Toy and Game Safety Labeling Act of 2013.

In the United States, the Florida Department of Health reported detectable levels of arsenic in over 60% of tested candy products through its Healthy Florida First initiative. Out of 46 popular candy brands tested, 28 contained arsenic. Health officials noted that inorganic arsenic is a known human carcinogen that can damage the brain, heart, liver, kidneys, and nervous system. The report highlighted extremely low estimated annual consumption limits for children to avoid exceeding safety thresholds for several major candy brands.
