Health organizations warn of industry influence on Scottish health policy

A coalition of 26 health organizations, including the British Heart Foundation Scotland, has warned that industries linked to tobacco, alcohol, and junk food are undermining public health policies in Scotland.

The Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Alliance Scotland released a report claiming these industries use specific tactics to influence policy, such as challenging evidence of harm, funding favorable research, and positioning themselves as legitimate stakeholders despite conflicts of interest. The coalition noted that these influences have contributed to stalled improvements in Scotland’s health, which currently faces the lowest life expectancy in Western Europe.

Health charities are calling for stronger safeguards and greater transparency to ensure that policy decisions regarding preventable illnesses and premature deaths are guided by evidence and the public interest rather than vested corporate interests.
