Health perspectives on black coffee and dietary coffee trends
Recent medical insights and nutritional assessments provide a dual perspective on coffee consumption. On one hand, oncologist Dr. Vartika Vishwani notes that moderate black coffee consumption—approximately 1.5 to 3.5 cups per day—is associated with various health benefits. Citing large observational studies and meta-analyses, she suggests such consumption may correlate with a lower risk of chronic diseases, including heart disease, liver disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke, as well as a lower overall mortality risk.
On the other hand, dietary trends like "Bulletproof Coffee"—a mixture of black coffee, butter, and coconut oil—aim to assist with weight loss by utilizing medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). Nutrition scientist Silke Restemeyer from the German Nutrition Society (DGE) explains that MCTs are more easily digested by the body than long-chain fatty acids. However, while these fats may support fat burning, the drink is calorie-dense, typically containing between 200 and 250 kilocalories per serving.
