Health professionals emphasize stroke prevention and symptom recognition

Medical professionals in Chile and Uruguay are intensifying efforts to raise awareness about stroke prevention and early symptom recognition following World Stroke Day.

In Puerto Aysén, Chile, the local hospital launched an educational campaign led by neurologist Dr. Marlene Valenzuela. The initiative focuses on teaching the community to identify three critical warning signs: sudden facial drooping, loss of strength in an arm or leg, and difficulty speaking. Health officials emphasized that rapid response via emergency services is vital to reducing long-term complications. This campaign follows data from the Ministry of Health showing that circulatory system diseases accounted for 18.6% of deaths in the Aysén commune between 2021 and 2023.

In Uruguay, Mariana Nadelman, head of Neurology at Perrando Hospital, reported that the facility treats between three and four stroke patients daily, with a concerning increase in cases among younger populations. Nadelman noted that the hospital recently implemented a dedicated Stroke Unit to improve response times. She clarified that strokes are often preventable through lifestyle management and emphasized the distinction between ischemic strokes, caused by interrupted blood flow, and hemorrhagic strokes, caused by ruptured blood vessels.
