Health professionals in Chile and Argentina address palliative and mental health needs

In observance of World Palliative Care Day, the Hospital Regional de Talca in Chile is highlighting the essential role of its Pain Relief and Palliative Care Unit. The unit, composed of 22 multidisciplinary professionals including doctors, nurses, and psychologists, manages approximately 1,000 patients across the Talca province through in-person, home-based, and tele-health services.

Dr. Pablo Guerrero, head of the unit, emphasized that palliative care is not limited to end-of-life scenarios but is a comprehensive approach to managing advanced illnesses and complex treatments to improve quality of life.

Simultaneously, health professionals in Argentina's Río Negro and Neuquén provinces are marking World Mental Health Day by focusing on the impact of economic instability. Experts Federico Schenkel and Mariana De León noted that job loss and financial uncertainty are driving increases in anxiety and insomnia. They highlighted that economic hardship affects human dignity and social bonds, necessitating stronger community networks to support mental well-being amidst limited healthcare resources.
