Health reports in Poland: Corneal transplant and viral outbreak investigation
Medical specialists in Sosnowiec report a case where a woman required a corneal transplant after swimming in the sea while wearing contact lenses during an exotic vacation. Prof. Dariusz Dobrowolski stated that a highly virulent bacterium entered the eye due to micro-damage, nearly causing a corneal perforation. The hospital has also successfully performed 200 corneal transplants since the start of 2026, including a procedure that significantly improved the sight of an eleven-year-old child.
In Międzywodzie, sanitary inspectors are investigating a mass outbreak of gastrointestinal symptoms affecting 53 residents at a rehabilitation center. Preliminary tests suggest the presence of adenoviruses and rotaviruses. While patients have been isolated and disinfection protocols implemented, no hospitalizations have been required. Authorities are currently awaiting water test results and microbiological analyses to confirm the exact cause.
