Health risks and hidden sources of excessive sugar consumption

Excessive sugar consumption poses significant health risks, including increased chances of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and difficulty maintaining a healthy weight. While humans are biologically predisposed to crave sweet tastes, modern industrialization has made sugar a ubiquitous ingredient in nearly all processed foods.

Many everyday foods marketed as healthy often contain high levels of hidden added sugars. Examples include flavored yogurts, which can contain as much sugar as a dessert, and breakfast cereals labeled as “whole grain” or “healthy” that contain alarming amounts of sugar. Granola and granola bars are also common sources of hidden sugar through the use of syrups, honey, or sweetened dried fruits. Experts recommend reading nutrition labels carefully, prioritizing high-fiber and low-added-sugar options, and choosing plain versions of products like yogurt to control intake.
