Health risks and precautions regarding lemon water consumption

While lemon water is widely recognized for health benefits such as aiding digestion, boosting immunity, and improving skin health, it may pose risks to certain individuals. According to pharmacist Nguyễn Thu Giang, the high acidity of lemon water can lead to digestive discomfort and exacerbate existing medical conditions.

Specific groups advised to limit or avoid lemon water include:

• Individuals with acid reflux or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): The acidity can irritate the esophagus and relax the lower esophageal sphincter, worsening heartburn. • People with sensitive teeth or dental issues: Citric acid can erode tooth enamel over time, leading to discoloration, sensitivity, and increased cavity risk. • Those with mouth ulcers or sore throats: The acid can irritate open sores, slowing the healing process and causing discomfort. • Individuals with citrus allergies: Although rare, symptoms such as itching, rashes, swelling, or difficulty breathing may occur.
