Health risks and wildlife behavior during the rainy season

The onset of the rainy season brings increased risks of mosquito-borne illnesses and changes in wildlife behavior. Stagnant water in flower pots, old tires, and open containers creates breeding grounds for mosquitoes, which can spread Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika.

Medical experts note that these three infections often present with similar initial symptoms, such as fever, headache, and muscle pain. While distinguishing between them can be difficult in the first few days, Dengue is particularly concerning due to the potential for a rapid decline in blood platelet counts. Doctors emphasize the importance of professional diagnosis through blood tests to identify the specific infection.

Additionally, heavy rains affect snake behavior. As water fills roads, fields, and gardens, snakes seek shelter in burrows, rock crevices, or under woodpiles to regulate body temperature and stay dry. Some species, such as rattlesnakes, may even coil their bodies to collect rainwater to drink. The increased visibility of snakes around buildings and garages after rain is often due to their natural habitats being flooded, forcing them to seek higher or drier ground.
