Health risks associated with immediate bed making

Making a bed immediately after waking up may inadvertently promote the growth of dust mites. According to IFLScience, bedding accumulates moisture from sweat and body heat during sleep. Covering the bed immediately can trap this moisture, creating a warm, damp environment ideal for dust mites to thrive.

Dust mites are microscopic arthropods that feed on human dead skin cells. While they do not bite, the American Lung Association notes that their waste and body fragments are common allergens. Exposure can cause sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, or exacerbate respiratory issues for individuals with asthma.

To mitigate these risks, experts suggest pulling covers to the foot of the bed or folding them aside to allow the mattress and sheets to air out and moisture to evaporate. Maintaining a dry bedroom environment and increasing airflow can also help limit mite populations.
