Health risks from fish toxins and mercury exposure

Certain fish species pose significant health risks due to natural toxins and heavy metal accumulation. Some toxins, such as tetrodotoxin found in pufferfish (fugu) and ciguatoxins found in reef fish, cannot be neutralized by common cooking methods like boiling, frying, or freezing. Tetrodotoxin is a potent neurotoxin that can cause numbness, muscle weakness, paralysis, and respiratory failure. Contaminated fish may appear, smell, and taste normal, making detection difficult for consumers.

Additionally, mercury levels in seafood present a long-term health concern. Mercury enters aquatic environments through natural processes and pollution, accumulating in larger fish as it moves up the food chain. While occasional consumption may be safe for most healthy adults, high levels of mercury can damage the brain and nervous system. Exposure is particularly concerning for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and young children.
