Health risks identified in residential pest control applications
Associate Professor Müge Ensari Özay of Üsküdar University has issued warnings regarding the health risks associated with pest control applications in homes and apartment buildings. She noted that chemical exposure can occur not only in the treated unit but also in neighboring apartments through air gaps and plumbing systems.
The level of risk depends on the active ingredient's toxicity, formulation, dosage, application method, and ventilation. While gel and bait applications generally pose lower risks, spraying, fogging, and aerosol methods can lead to serious respiratory exposure. Specific chemicals like organophosphates and carbamates carry higher risks of acute neurotoxicity.
Of particular concern are fumigants that create gas. For instance, aluminum phosphide produces highly toxic phosphine gas when it comes into contact with moisture, which can lead to life-threatening exposure in enclosed spaces. Dr. Özay emphasizes that professionals must be transparent about the products used, including their active ingredients and dosages, rather than citing ‘secret formulas’ or claiming products do not require licensing.
