Health risks of consuming raw acorns and beech nuts

Consuming raw acorns and beech nuts can cause gastrointestinal distress, particularly in children. Nutrition expert Daniela Krehl from Verbraucherzentrale Bayern advises against eating these forest fruits directly during walks.

Acorns contain tannins, which are astringent substances that can lead to stomach issues. Beech nuts contain fagin, a mildly toxic substance. To make these fruits edible, the tannins or toxins must be removed. Acorns can be soaked in water for several days, while beech nuts can be prepared by pouring hot water over them or roasting them in a pan to develop a nutty flavor.

Both acorns and beech nuts are gluten-free and can be used as flour substitutes in baking, provided additional binding agents like eggs or flaxseeds are used.
