Health risks of fungal proliferation in homes and nails

Fungal proliferation in homes and on nails is often driven by environmental factors such as excess humidity, low ventilation, and lack of sunlight. In residential settings, these conditions can lead to significant microorganism growth, which may pose health risks to vulnerable populations.

Patricio Manzárraga, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción, notes that while fungi are naturally present, those capable of causing disease are limited. He warns that immunocompromised individuals—including premature infants, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses like diabetes or tuberculosis—are at the highest risk. Maintaining ventilated, dry, and well-lit spaces is recommended to prevent household growth.

For nail fungus, which can be exacerbated by footwear that generates excessive heat, a mixture of baking soda and vinegar is suggested due to its antiseptic properties. The recommended application involves applying the mixture to the affected area once daily for 20 minutes for 15 consecutive days, followed by cleaning the area with a damp cotton pad.
