Health risks of prolonged sitting and remote work
Prolonged sitting, particularly during remote work, poses significant risks to physical health, including spinal strain, neck and shoulder tension, and reduced blood circulation. Experts note that the human body requires constant movement to maintain energy, flexibility, and overall well-being.
Ana Carolina Lacerda Borges, coordinator of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy at Centro Universitário Módulo, warns that staying in the same position for extended periods increases the load on the spine and can lead to muscle stiffness, wrist tension, and impaired circulation. These physical issues can also negatively impact concentration, productivity, and emotional well-being.
To mitigate these risks, specialists recommend taking active breaks every 50 to 60 minutes. Even a few minutes of movement can help reduce muscle overload, improve circulation, and renew energy. Warning signs that a break is necessary include back pain, heavy sensations in the legs, neck stiffness, tingling in the hands or feet, frequent headaches, and mental fatigue.
