Health risks of remote work and sedentary lifestyles
Remote work and prolonged sedentary behavior present significant risks to both physical and mental health. While working from home offers flexibility, it often leads to improvised workspaces, reduced daily movement, and difficulty separating professional tasks from personal life. These factors are linked to increased exhaustion, anxiety, and psychological distress.
Medical research emphasizes that regular exercise may not fully offset the risks of sitting for extended periods. A meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine involving over 44,000 people suggests that while 30 to 40 minutes of moderate to vigorous daily physical activity can significantly mitigate the link between sedentary time and mortality risk, it does not entirely erase the negative effects of sitting for eight or more hours a day. The World Health Organization recommends limiting sedentary time and replacing sitting periods with physical activity whenever possible to reduce risks of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
