Health Risks of Sleeping with Fans During Heat Waves

During recent heat waves, many people keep fans running through the night to stay cool. Health professionals caution that this practice can exacerbate health problems. Dr. Hana Patel explains that continuous fan use can stir up dust, pollen and other allergens, leading to sneezing, throat irritation, nasal congestion and worsened asthma symptoms, especially in children. Sleep therapist Natalie Pennicotte‑Collier adds that constant airflow can dry the mucous membranes of the nose and throat, increase mucus production, cause dry eyes, mouths and skin, and even trigger muscle stiffness or cramps when the airflow is directed straight at the body.

Experts recommend limiting fan use by turning it off after an hour with a timer, directing airflow toward a wall or ceiling rather than directly at the face, regularly cleaning fan blades, and staying well‑hydrated. Those with severe allergies, asthma or chronic dry‑eye conditions should consider alternative cooling methods such as breathable bedding, moderate air‑conditioning or other ventilation strategies.
