Health risks persist in Turkey following flood disasters

Health experts warn that the dangers following flood disasters do not end once the waters recede. Contaminated water, mud, and surfaces can harbor invisible microorganisms, including sewage waste and animal excrement, which pose significant infection risks.

Sema Aykol Faikoğlu, Deputy Director of the Vocational School of Health Services at Istanbul Rumeli University, notes that consuming contaminated food or water can lead to gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever. There is also a specific risk of leptospirosis, which can be transmitted through contact with water or soil contaminated by infected animal urine, particularly if individuals have open wounds.

Additionally, moisture in flooded homes and businesses can lead to mold growth. Mold exposure may cause allergic reactions, eye and skin irritation, and increased respiratory issues, especially for individuals with asthma. Experts recommend using waterproof gloves, boots, and protective clothing during cleanup, ensuring wounds are kept clean, and strictly following official guidance regarding water and food safety.
