Health Savings Accounts offer triple tax advantages for employees

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) provide a unique triple tax advantage: contributions are tax-free, investment growth is tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are also tax-free. For those contributing via payroll deduction, the process also avoids the 7.65% FICA tax applied to personal bank account contributions.

Unlike Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs), HSA funds roll over annually and remain with the employee if they change jobs. However, research indicates a gap in utilization; as of mid-2025, only approximately 10% of HSA accounts held invested funds, despite investor accounts averaging significantly higher balances than non-investor accounts.

For the 2026 tax year, the IRS has set contribution limits at $4,400 for self-only coverage and $8,750 for family coverage, with an additional $1,000 catch-up contribution allowed for account holders aged 55 or older. To claim tax-free reimbursements, users must maintain records of qualified medical expenses, though they are not required to submit these to account sponsors for approval.
