Health studies explore links between sleep, diet, and thyroid function

Recent scientific studies have explored various factors influencing sleep quality and its connection to other health conditions.

Research published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that consuming two kiwi fruits daily, approximately one hour before bedtime, may improve sleep metrics. In a small study of 24 adults, participants saw a 13.4% increase in total sleep time and improvements in sleep onset and duration. While the fruit contains serotonin, folate, and vitamin C, researchers note that the exact mechanisms and the need for larger-scale studies are still being determined.

Separately, a study published in the journal Sleep has identified a potential link between obstructive sleep apnea and hypothyroidism. Examining 761 participants in São Paulo, researchers found that among those suffering from sleep apnea, nearly half (49.5%) also presented with hypothyroidism. This is significant given that hypothyroidism affects only about 5% of the general population. The findings highlight the importance of investigating the relationship between thyroid function and sleep disorders.
