Health studies link beverage temperature and morning hydration to wellness

Recent health studies and expert advice highlight the importance of morning hydration and the risks associated with beverage temperature. Experts suggest drinking 225 to 450 ml of water immediately upon waking to replenish fluids lost during sleep, which can aid concentration and digestion. Ethan Balk, an associate professor of clinical nutrition at NYU Steinhardt, recommends incorporating this habit into morning routines to prevent dehydration-related cognitive issues.

Separately, research published in the International Journal of Cancer, utilizing data from the Million Women Study and UK Biobank, indicates a link between consuming very hot beverages and an increased risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Analyzing nearly one million adults in the United Kingdom, researchers found that those consuming drinks at excessively high temperatures had more than triple the relative risk compared to those consuming warm beverages. The study emphasizes that the risk is driven by repeated heat exposure to the esophageal mucosa rather than the coffee or tea itself.
