Health Tips for Sun Exposure and Pool Swimming: Hydration, Skin and Hair Care

Spending extended time in the sun can lead to dehydration, heat‑related fatigue, and skin irritation. Nutritionists recommend water‑rich foods such as watermelon, coconut water, melon, cucumber and Greek yogurt to restore fluids, electrolytes and antioxidant nutrients that support skin recovery. Watermelon provides about 92% water and lycopene, while coconut water supplies potassium and magnesium. Melon offers beta‑carotene for vitamin A production, aiding skin cell regeneration.

Chlorinated pool water can similarly damage skin and hair by stripping natural oils, causing dryness, irritation or contact dermatitis. To mitigate these effects, experts advise pre‑showering and wetting the skin before swimming, applying sunscreen at least 20 minutes prior, using leave‑in conditioners or spray moisturizers, wearing swim caps and goggles, and showering immediately after swimming followed by a hydrating lotion. These steps help reduce chlorine absorption and preserve skin and hair health.
