Health tips to prevent dehydration and diarrhea during hot weather
Hot summer temperatures increase sweating and can lead to rapid fluid loss, raising the risk of dehydration and heat‑related illnesses. Dehydration impairs the body's ability to regulate temperature and may cause electrolyte imbalance, which can worsen gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea.
Experts recommend drinking plenty of plain water and, when desired, homemade flavored water made with fruit, cucumber, herbs or other natural ingredients to encourage fluid intake. Adding a small amount of salt and sugar to water or consuming lightly salted soups helps replenish lost electrolytes. Alcohol, carbonated drinks and excessive sugary beverages should be avoided because they can aggravate dehydration.
Proper food handling is crucial; perishable items should be kept cool and not left exposed to heat for long periods to prevent bacterial growth that can cause food‑borne diarrhea. In the event of diarrhea, increase fluid and electrolyte intake, rest, and eat bland foods such as rice, bananas, boiled potatoes or toast. If symptoms persist or worsen, medical advice should be sought.
