Health trends in Poland: Thyroid issues and colorectal cancer concerns

Medical experts in Poland are highlighting significant health trends regarding thyroid diseases and colorectal cancer. According to Professor Marcin Barczyński of Jagiellonian University, one in five Poles suffers from thyroid issues. Women are affected nine times more frequently than men, a disparity potentially linked to hormonal influences, age, and increased exposure to ionizing radiation.

While thyroid tumors are common, appearing in about half of examined individuals, they are rarely malignant, with only 1-2% being cancerous. Most thyroid dysfunction can be managed through pharmacological treatment rather than surgery.

In the field of oncology, data from the National Cancer Registry shows that over 18,000 colorectal cancer cases were diagnosed in Poland in 2022, resulting in nearly 12,000 deaths. Professor Piotr Rutkowski of the Polish Oncology Society notes that two-thirds of patients are diagnosed at advanced stages. There is a growing trend of younger patients, particularly those under 50, developing more aggressive forms of cancer due to lifestyle and environmental factors. Experts emphasize that regular colonoscopies are essential for detecting precancerous polyps and improving survival rates through early intervention.
