Paraguay health workers protest for salary increases and career stability

Health professionals in Paraguay have launched a large-scale mobilization in Asunción, organized by the Federación Nacional de Trabajadores de la Salud (FNTS). The protest, involving 28 different unions and associations, took place in front of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare.

The primary demands of the demonstrators include a 50% salary readjustment for all public health workers to address wage disparities and inflation. Additionally, workers are calling for the formal implementation of a health career path (carrera sanitaria) to provide professional stability and clear advancement rules.

Specific groups within the mobilization have unique grievances. A group of 624 nursing graduates is demanding permanent appointments after being left on an eligibility list following a 2023 contest. Speech therapists are also protesting, seeking to reduce their weekly workload to 15 hours, noting that other institutions offer significantly fewer hours. The mobilization included various professionals, such as dentists, biochemists, radiologists, and ambulance drivers.
