Healthcare access issues reported in Balearic Islands

A chronic oncology patient with disabilities has reported significant difficulties accessing specialist care within the Balearic healthcare system. The patient noted that the Espai Salut application showed multiple overdue appointments, which subsequently disappeared from the digital platform without explanation.

The patient highlighted a gap in the Balearic delay guarantee decree, noting that while it covers initial consultations and surgeries, it excludes the follow-up reviews essential for managing chronic illnesses. Additionally, the patient reported limited access to the Traumatology department, which reportedly only provides telephone service for one hour a day.

Concerns were also raised regarding the Can Misses hospital, the only public hospital on the island. Nursing unions have previously reported extreme wait times in the emergency department, and critics argue that directing chronic patients to emergency services for routine reviews further saturates a system already struggling with staffing and planning.
