Healthcare advancements: Digital organ donation and AI cancer detection
In Brazil, the Electronic Authorization for Organ Donation (AEDO) has seen significant adoption, with nearly 9,000 people in the state of São Paulo formalizing their wishes digitally. Regulated by the National Council of Justice, this tool allows individuals to officially record their intent to donate, which is then shared with the National Transplant System. While Brazilian law still requires final family consent after death, the digital record facilitates communication with medical authorities. Currently, at least 23,000 people are on the waiting list for organs in São Paulo.
In medical technology, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have developed an artificial intelligence system designed to mimic the diagnostic process of pathologists. Published in the journal Nature, the study details how the AI was trained by observing how specialists navigate tissue slides, adjusting magnification and focusing on specific regions. Unlike traditional systems that analyze fixed areas, this AI learns to replicate the deliberate attention patterns of human experts, improving the identification of cancer signals within complex tissue samples.
