Healthcare AI adoption hampered by infrastructure gaps and shadow AI

Healthcare providers are rapidly integrating artificial intelligence into clinical and administrative workflows, but many lack the infrastructure and governance needed for secure, compliant use. Unapproved AI tools—referred to as “shadow AI”—are being used for note‑taking, billing appeals, patient communications and other tasks, exposing protected health information (PHI) and creating audit, HIPAA and vendor‑contract risks.

A Nutanix Healthcare Enterprise Cloud Index 2026 survey found that 88% of organizations consider their current infrastructure inadequate for on‑premises AI workloads, while 79% report employees deploying AI applications without IT oversight. Around 83% said such shadow AI creates business risks, and 86% noted a surge in container adoption to enable secure edge AI processing. Experts recommend risk assessments, governed AI frameworks, technical safeguards and security‑awareness training to mitigate these threats and protect patient data.
