Healthcare burnout crisis affects European medical professionals

Healthcare professionals in Europe are facing a mental health crisis, with one in three reporting symptoms of depression or anxiety and one in ten having experienced suicidal thoughts, according to WHO data. In Italy, the situation is particularly acute, with 52% of doctors reporting burnout.

Experts and labor representatives, including Gianluca Giuliano of UGL Salute, emphasize that burnout is a systemic occupational phenomenon rather than an individual weakness. Key drivers include chronic stress, insufficient staffing—notably a shortage of approximately 30,000 doctors and 60,000 nurses in Italy—excessive workloads often exceeding 60 hours per week, increased bureaucratic pressure, and workplace aggression.

The crisis also features a significant gender dimension, as women and younger professionals are more exposed. This instability poses a direct risk to patient safety, as burnout can increase the probability of medical errors by up to 57%, potentially compromising the entire healthcare system.
