Healthcare cooperation and screening updates in Rome and San Marino

The seventh edition of the Welfair healthcare exhibition opened in Rome, focusing on the sustainability and cooperation of healthcare systems. The event brings together 700 speakers across 70 thematic tables to discuss European healthcare coordination, service organization, and professional evolution. Filippo Tortoriello of the Rome Chamber of Commerce highlighted the life sciences sector's importance in the Lazio region, noting approximately 21,000 employees and a turnover of 10 billion euros.

Discussions at the summit emphasized the strategic value of pharmaceutical and technological supply chains to ensure resilience during geopolitical and commercial tensions. Healthcare leaders, including Giuseppe Quintavalle of the Italian Federation of Healthcare and Hospital Companies (Fiaso), advocated for a coordinated model of expertise to overcome economic constraints and regional needs.

In San Marino, the Istituto per la Sicurezza Sociale (ISS) confirmed that annual mammography screening programs will continue without changes. The ISS is preparing a five-year observational scientific study to evaluate the Sammarinese model of early breast cancer diagnosis, which utilizes annual mammographies and tomosynthesis. The study protocol is expected to be submitted to the Sammarinese Bioethics Committee in 2027.
