Healthcare costs in Indonesia face scrutiny over regional comparisons and price hikes
Healthcare costs in Indonesia are under scrutiny due to rising service fees and comparisons with neighboring Malaysia. In Jakarta, residents have reported significant increases in psychological consultation fees at regional public hospitals (RSUD). Specifically, at RSUD Pasar Minggu, fees reportedly rose from Rp110,000 per session to Rp450,000 for 30 minutes or Rp550,000 for 60 minutes.
These adjustments follow Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung’s signing of Governor Regulation (Pergub) Number 17 of 2026, which mandates tariff adjustments for various health services provided by regional public service agencies (BLUD). The regulation specifies that costs vary based on hospital class and service categories; for instance, clinical psychology examinations at Class C and D hospitals are set at regular rates of Rp75,000.
Regarding the trend of Indonesians seeking medical treatment in Malaysia due to perceived lower costs, industry experts suggest a direct comparison is difficult. Rista Qatrini Manurung of AIA Financial noted that differences in economic conditions, global inflation impacts, and post-pandemic healthcare-seeking behaviors between the two nations prevent an 'apple to apple' comparison. She emphasized that Indonesia must continue improving its domestic healthcare services to ensure citizen comfort.
