Healthcare facilities in Queensland and Hong Kong undergo major upgrades

Healthcare facilities in Australia and Hong Kong are undergoing significant upgrades to improve patient flow and specialized care.

In Queensland, Redland Hospital has opened a new patient transit lounge as part of an $80 million ‘Easier Access to Health Services Plan’. The facility is designed to move patients who no longer require emergency or ward beds into a dedicated area while they await medication, transport, or discharge. This initiative aims to free up beds for more critical patients and reduce ambulance offload delays. Additionally, the Queensland government is investing $93.1 million to hire 53 mental health specialist nurses across several hospitals to strengthen frontline care.

In Hong Kong, Kwai Chung Hospital is expected to complete its relocation to a new building by the third quarter of this year. The new facility introduces a ‘treatment village’ concept, providing more spacious, open, and community-oriented environments to aid patient recovery. The expansion includes Hong Kong’s first psychiatric ‘Children and Adolescent Service Wing’ and offers 1,000 beds, accounting for approximately one-quarter of the Hospital Authority’s psychiatric bed capacity. The design incorporates safety features and outdoor spaces, such as sky gardens, to enhance the therapeutic environment.
