Healthcare initiatives focus on rural mental health in Togo and rehab tech in France
In Togo, the Société togolaise de santé mentale (SOTOSAM), in partnership with the University of Lomé, recently organized a mobile medical camp in Mango to address the shortage of mental health specialists in rural areas. The initiative provided free screenings, consultations, prescriptions, and medications through a team of psychiatrists, psychologists, and clinicians. While these mobile campaigns help bridge the gap caused by geographic distance and the scarcity of practitioners, experts note that they face structural challenges regarding the continuity of long-term care and the need to combat social stigma.
In France, the CHU Dijon Bourgogne has launched REALISTIC, a collaborative experimental hub designed to advance rehabilitation technologies. Supported by the France 2030 plan, the project brings together researchers, healthcare providers, and industrial partners—including Samsung Electronics and Thales—to test high-tech solutions like rehabilitation robots, virtual reality, and AI-driven tools on real patients. The goal is to accelerate the transition of medical innovations from the development stage to clinical use, improving recovery processes for patients following strokes or complex surgeries.
