Healthcare IT transitions from VMware following Broadcom acquisition

Following Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware, changes to software licensing models—including the removal of perpetual licenses and rising subscription costs—are prompting organizations to seek alternative platforms.

In the healthcare sector, transitioning away from VMware presents specific challenges due to the risk of downtime for critical systems such as electronic health records (EHR), clinical databases, and billing software. To mitigate these risks, IT teams are exploring Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI) solutions, such as Nutanix.

An HCI approach allows for a continuous replication migration strategy. This involves setting up a new platform in parallel with the existing VMware environment, mirroring data in the background while clinical operations continue, and performing a cutover during off-hours to ensure minimal disruption to patient care.
