Healthcare professionals protest austerity in Berlin

Thousands of doctors and healthcare professionals protested in Berlin on Saturday against planned austerity measures in the German healthcare system. Demonstrators gathered in front of the Bundestag to demand a reconsideration of the approved savings laws, warning that such cuts could jeopardize patient care and prevention.

Public tension has escalated following comments made by Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a television appearance. Merz referred to a pediatrician as a “beneficiary” (Nutznießerin) of the healthcare system, a remark that medical professionals and nursing staff have described as a lack of appreciation for their work. The controversy gained significant traction on social media, including a viral video from a Berlin-based doctor and midwife.

In a related cabinet reshuffle, Chancellor Merz announced that Carsten Linnemann will serve as the new Federal Minister of Health. Linnemann stated he would approach the role with “humility” as he prepares to manage the ongoing reforms and political opposition.
